Baylink Games

Year 6, along with Year 5, had a fabulous day at Sandown Bay Academy on Tuesday this week taking part in the Baylink Games. The event, which includes schools across the Bay area, was run by the pupils at SBA. The sports leaders there managed and led a variety of sports: netball, basketball, athletics, cricket, tag rugby and girls’ football.
As well as enjoying the main events, the children had time to explore the ‘Olympic Village’ which contained a trampoline, food tents, rowing machines and cricket practice. They also enjoyed watching a wonderful opening ceremony with a variety of dances from around the world.
The children represented us incredibly well and displayed excellent teamwork skills, passion for sport and exemplary behaviour.

SUPER SCIENCE!

It was a busy but fun week at Gatten and Lake as the children took part in a whole school Science Week. On Monday, we kick-started our week with a rota between Y4,5 and 6 whereby the children did a different experiment with another teacher. The experiments included rocket balloons, chromatography and a Skittles experiment involving dissolving.
The rest of the week included meeting a variety of pets such as: Miss Redrup’s rats, Miss Edmunds tree frog, a tortoise belonging to one of our Year 4 children and a depu belonging to a Year 1 child. The children found out about their diet, life span and other relevant information about these animals.
We were also privileged to have Mrs Manning visit us in her capacity as a secondary school science teacher. She taught the children how to prepare slides and use a microscope. Mrs Ridgway also came in to talk to the children about her role as a theatre nurse at the hospital: sharing equipment and in her scrubs!
Another exciting opportunity given to the children this week was a session in a portable planetarium, learning more about the ISS and finding out about planets and star constellations. In class, Paul, also from the Planetarium at Fort Victoria, talked to the children about the moon phases, seasons and day and night.
To end the week, the children dressed up in science related costumes such as vets, Einstein, doctors and nurses. They enjoyed some fun experiments such as ice balloons, density of liquids, getting a skewer through a balloon and making periscopes. The children also researched the life and work of Thomas Edison.

Kingswood 2017

Wow! What a week! Despite a rather unsettled week weather wise, the children had an amazing week at Kingswood, Bembridge, for our annual Year 6 residential. We had a fully packed schedule including 3G swing, Leap of Faith, pool party, archery, laser quest and buggy build to name a few of the wonderful activities on offer. The children were an absolute credit to us and all participated and challenged themselves. We are very proud of them all and they were a pleasure to take.
